Resurrection Sunday Devotional
Main Text: Luke 24:1-7
There have been many wonderful moments in human history. Just within the past 200 years, we have seen: the invention of telephones, televisions, and computers; the development of x-rays, CT scans, and world-changing medications; transportation methods via aircrafts, automobiles, and subways. It is remarkable to consider how one event, discovery, or invention is capable of changing the world forever.
Yet when surveying the entirety of man’s existence, everything pales in comparison to the resurrection of Jesus. Unlike the greatest of human achievements, Christ’s bodily resurrection from the dead not only has significance for the present age; it also has significance for the eternal age to come (1 Corinthians 15:12-29). On that note, there are several observations that can be made about our Lord’s resurrection.
First, Jesus’ resurrection from the grave fulfilled key Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah (Psalm 22:12-31; Isaiah 53:10-11; Daniel 12:1-3). In doing so, the trustworthiness of Scripture was further established by Christ’s resurrection (Luke 24:18-27; 1 Peter 1:10-11). We also discover that the resurrection was necessary for our salvation from eternal judgment (Romans 4:23-25; 2 Corinthians 5:14-15), and for our future resurrection into God’s kingdom (Romans 6:4-8; 1 Corinthians 15:42-57). The New Testament teaches that without the resurrection of Jesus, we have no hope for our sins to be forgiven or for us to experience a future bodily resurrection into everlasting glory (Ephesians 2:4-7; Philippians 3:8-11). In other words, our victory over sin, Satan, and death is ultimately dependent on—and guaranteed by—Christ’s victory (Romans 8:35-37; Revelation 2:11).
It is only fitting that the conclusion of Holy Week brings forth the climax of human history (Luke 24:1-7). Can you imagine the joy that flooded the disciples’ hearts when they encountered the empty tomb? When you read eyewitness accounts of Christ’s bodily resurrection, do you stand in awestruck wonder? For endless years in the New Heavens and New Earth, every believer and holy angel will never stop marveling over the greatest moment in human history (Revelation 21:22-22:5). May we likewise do the same in the meantime, for the Lord Jesus Christ is risen! Hallelujah!
